About this listen

One of the inspirations for the major motion picture Everest, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Keira Knightley.

This is the true story of a 24-hour period on Everest when members of three separate expeditions were caught in a storm and faced a battle against hurricane-force winds, exposure, and the effects of altitude, which ended the worst single-season death toll in the peak's history.

In March 1996, Outside magazine sent veteran journalist and seasoned climber Jon Krakauer on an expedition led by celebrated Everest guide Rob Hall. Despite the expertise of Hall and the other leaders, by the end of summit day eight people were dead.

Krakauer's audiobook is at once the story of the ill-fated adventure and an analysis of the factors leading up to its tragic end. Written within months of the events it chronicles, Into Thin Air clearly evokes the majestic Everest landscape. As the journey up the mountain progresses, Krakauer puts it in context by recalling the triumphs and perils of other Everest trips throughout history. The author's own anguish over what happened on the mountain is palpable as he leads his listeners to ponder timeless questions.

Great book, Terrific performance

I loved the accents that the reader put into the performance. Along with the audible empathy, a riveting experience and a terrifically written account.

you think you know the story but you don't

This is one of those stories that really hooks yo. Iit talks about a group of people who are doing an insanely risky thing without any obvious reason, but why they do it, how much planning and problems do they make and how events beyond all planning of humans can lead to tragic consequences, an extremely well written and read book, really recommended

Maybe Krakauer was biased!

The chain of events leading to the accident are described well. Krakauer was not an Aplinist so, his opinions seemed judgemental. The world needs to hear this sad story needs to be heard.
Narration was decent.

Masterful Adventure Literature

I had read the book months after it was first launched. Had wanted to read it again and in between had seen the movies based on the book. But this audio version was like walking alongside Krakauer on that tragic trip up Everest and back.
There is no body better than Jon in this genre of literature.

mind gripping heart wrenching story

i had this book on my kindle few years back. i read it. still when i found it on audible i tried to immerse in it once more. jon krakauer wrote from his heart. i could visualize all the scenarios he had encountered. i'm not English speaking person. so i can't express myself properly. the book is great, must read for all who love adventures. extremely well narrated by philip franklin. till now i thought stephen fry was the best narrator. now i found another one just like him. i enjoyed every moment of his narration.

Gripping and unputdownable!

Very well written by Jon Krakauer and narrated by Phillip Franklin. The detailled description of the climb and the ordeal is very clearly imaginable. The book is an absolute treasure for a climber and is a must for every trekker. Hope Jon has made with peace himself..
