風呂敷は、物を収納したり、包んで持ち運ぶための四角い布のこと。大事なものにかぶせ、埃を防ぐ使い方もあります。
風呂敷の起源は不明ですが、平安時代や鎌倉時代には、品物を包む「衣包」や「平包」と呼ばれる布があったそうです。
室町時代、風呂で脱いだ服を包んだことなどから＂風呂敷＂という言葉が生まれ、江戸時代の銭湯の普及に伴い、庶民の間に広まりました。
1960年代に紙袋やポリ袋が普及すると、風呂敷の出番は少なくなりましたが、洗って何度も使える風呂敷は環境に優しいため、最近は再び脚光を浴びています。
小さく折りたためて携帯に便利な風呂敷には、現在では多様な色や素材、柄のものがあり、普段使いにはもってこいの伝統品です。©2017 KODANSHA
