About this listen
Joining us at Audible Studios is British racing driver Jenson Button, who won the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship. Button began racing at the age of eight, when his dad bought him his first kart, and he entered Formula 1 in 2000.
As with the career of any F1 driver, there are ups and downs due to car issues and failures, but Button was on his way up. In 2009, Button won the Formula 1 World Championship, and at every race along the way, his father was there cheering him on. After the death of his father in 2014, Button realised the world of F1 wasn't the same without his dad as his constant, and he began to take steps back.
Since retiring from F1 in 2016, Button has still been racing, for instance in Japan’s Super GT, but also has more time for his hobbies such as triathlons, mountain biking, as well as writing the odd book! Button's newest title, How to Be an F1 Driver, takes us through each stage of his own personal journey to becoming and sustaining a career as an F1 driver. We spoke to Jenson Button about whether he would prefer to beat a teammate or be on the podium, why being a tall driver makes things tricky and how many people it takes to start an F1 car.
