Ernestine, vecchia conoscenza di Maigret che l’ha arrestata 17 anni prima quando era una prostituta nota come la Stangona, gli racconta che il marito ha visto il cadavere di una donna durante un tentativo di scasso. Maigret rintraccia la casa coinvolta e scopre che ci abita il dentista Guillaume Serre con la madre e con la moglie, che però è sospettosamente assente. Il commissario capisce presto che Serre sta proteggendo la madre, che ha ucciso la nuora e si prepara ad avvelenare anche il figlio.
