L’omicidio di Emile Boulay, detto il Bottegaio, sembra da subito anomalo al commissario Maigret. Innanzi tutto perché il cadavere è stato tenuto nascosto per più di quarantott'ore prima di venir abbandonato su un marciapiede. E poi perché Emile è stato strangolato e in genere negli ambienti della malavita si usa la pistola, o al massimo il coltello. Lo stesso Boulay, del resto, era un personaggio anomalo: chi poteva avere interesse a farlo fuori?
