Even before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, capitalism was stuck. It had no answers to a host of problems, including disease, inequality, the digital divide and, perhaps most blatantly, the environmental crisis. Taking her inspiration from the 'moonshot' programmes which successfully co-ordinated public and private sectors on a massive scale, Mariana Mazzucato calls for the same level of boldness and experimentation to be applied to the biggest problems of our time. We must, she argues, rethink the capacities and role of government within the economy and society, and above all recover a sense of public purpose. Mission Economy, whose ideas are already being adopted around the world, offers a way out of our impasse to a more optimistic future.

A Mission Driven Book
In my limited experience, seldom has content, presentation and narration matched been in sync. This book is that fantastic exception to it. The content - the role that an imaginative public sector in a mission mode can do - matches the presentation - the ideas are explained with such clarity and precision along with figures that are described so well, - matches the wonderful narration of the book. I cannot recommend this enough - especially when one feels hopeless about the future. As the author rightly points out, we need to only look back five decades to see what a public sector in a mission mode is capable of.
In no way, under estimating the role of private sector, ( a rather unfortunate and I believe, untrue criticism on the previous works of the author) this book relies on how one needs to marry ambition, capability and intersectionality to achieve grand mission whether it be space research or a sustainable development strategy. In addition to the content, I absolutely loved the optimism that the author brings even in a pandemic ravaged world.
Thoroughly enjoyed the book and definitely recommended.
