About this listen

After a routine delivery, midwife Sarah Brandt visits her patient in a rooming house and finds that another boarder, a young girl, has been killed. At the request of sergeant Frank Malloy, she searches the girl's room and discovers that the victim is from one of the most prominent families in New York - and the sister of an old friend. The powerful family, fearful of scandal, refuses to permit an investigation. But with Malloy's help, Sarah begins a dangerous quest to bring the killer to justice before death claims another victim.

My first ever gaslight murder book, ended up listening to 20 more!

I love how the characters develop, i have followed sarah and frank to 20 books after this and their lives just change so much after they meet, along with that each story of how they solve murders is refreshing. My favourite series yet.

Predictable yet entertaining

The plot is very predictable by the middle of the book. But still will keep you engaged. The narrator has done a fabulous job

Learning History through Mystery

A Murder at Astor Place is a reminder of why there are rules we are so accustomed to now... History can teach you to learn from mistakes, while Murder Mysteries show you that the world has much evil lurking even in the daylight. This series, if you give it a chance, will show you a world that is forgotten, but what had to happen for us to get where we are today.

New favourite series!

I'm so glad I stumbled across this book. I'm obsessed with the series. The character development and world building are wonderful. I loved the narrator on the first few and I'm glad it was her when I first started reading. There's a new narrator a few books down and if it were her in the first one, I wouldn't have gotten through the book. I've now switched to ebooks to avoid the new narrator ( sorry but I'd rather listen to a fork on a chalkboard)
