About this listen

The Prodigal Son Mission on Mulberry Bend stands as a refuge for girls who otherwise would have to live by selling the only thing they have of value - themselves. The work being done there so impresses midwife Sarah Brandt that she volunteers to help out however she can - with clothes, with medical assistance, and with the organization of a benefit dinner. And when one of the girls is found dead and refused burial because of her former life, Sarah's passion for justice is aroused. Reluctantly, Sergeant Frank Malloy agrees to look into the death, if only to keep Sarah from endangering herself by pursuing the matter. But Sarah cannot be kept out of the investigation, and, just as Malloy feared, her attempts to find the cause of the unfortunate girl's death put her in deadly danger - from an unexpected source.

Victoria Thompson books are really well written and the narration is what makes it such a good listen. Highly recommend

Good listen

Ending Richard Denis’ character was rather too convenient and unnecessary! Hence the four star instead of five stars.

Gripping till the end

One day the protagonist duo will solve the murder before the reader.. jokes apart, it's a good series and I am enjoying reading it..

Great book but end was heartbreaking..

You'd probably never want to get embroiled in a Murder in your life, but there's something uniquely thrilling about reading a Murder mystery. Is it the chase? The characters, all of whom seem to have a motive to kill? Is it the satisfying conclusion, something real life so rarely gives us? Or is it the protagonists, who happen to have all the skills to weed out the murderer/s?

Whether one or all of the reasons, The Gaslight Mysteries are more than capable of keeping you hooked or leave you wanting more. The chemistry between the lead characters is subtle enough to not overpower the murder investigation and yet always move an inch further than what it was in the previous book.

Murder on the Mulberry Bend is a Murder mystery set in the 1800s revolving around a Woman's Mission, the generosity of the rich, the ignored poor and a reminder that most Americans are immigrants.

What did I think of this book?
I thought that Sarah Brandt was a little reckless in this book, although her actions do make sense in the end. Malloy going all out to look for Dr Bandt's killer shows his as a police officer even when not solving murders by Mrs Brandt's side. Little Aggie was a star, hope to see more of her.
