Master storyteller and internationally bestselling author Christopher Paolini returns to the World of Eragon in this stunning epic fantasy set a year after the events of the Inheritance Cycle.
The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror.
Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society. Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the air - and Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagaësia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untravelled, where Murtagh and Thorn must use every weapon in their arsenal, from brains to brawn, to find and outwit a mysterious witch. A witch who is much more than she seems.
In this gripping novel starring one of the most popular characters from Christopher Paolini's blockbuster Inheritance Cycle, a Dragon Rider must discover what he stands for in a world that has abandoned him. Murtagh is the perfect book to enter the World of Eragon for the first time...or to joyfully return.

An interesting but frustrating read
Background: I have read/listened to all the other Inheritance Cycle books and loved them all; one of my favorite high fantasy series.
Murtagh had quite a lot of good exploration of the world outside of Eragon's story. Bachel's cult is also an interesting adversary with many enjoyable elements. However, the overbearing difficulties I had when trying to get through this were with Murtagh's character.
He simply does not learn from his mistakes. Over the course of the book, he faces various challenges and he always manages to underestimate and underprepare for them. Repeatedly. Almost every approach he takes seems obviously flawed, especially since we know that he is not a stupid person. Regardless of his lack of technical knowledge, one feels that he should put a basic amount of thought into his actions.
This made it very tiring to get through the novel, particularly in latter sections where it drags on incessantly. Useful for those following the overarching story but I wish I had got the physical book so at least I could have skipped parts easily.
Gerard Doyle knocks the performance out of the park as usual.

Wasted potential
Felt aimless in the beginning. There were sidemissions which had little to no relevance to the overall story, not contributing to the growth of characters or even help establish a connect.
It picked up in the middle but then became too slow. Dwelled so much on one thing with the parts achieving very little in the end.
The end was as expected, setting up for future books but still an unsatisfactory for a long book. I personally wasn't rooting for the characters throughout the story except for a few moments in between.
Overall, it was an average read and if the story continues in the future books, this book can even be skipped as it revealed little about the larger story.
