About this listen

This is as much the story of Indian advertising as it is about India. Ad veteran Ambi Parameswaran looks at how advertising has evolved, reflecting the country's culture, politics and economy in the last 50 years.

From sartorial taste and food habits to marriage and old age, music and language to celebrities and censorship, Ambi examines more than a hundred ads to study how the Indian consumer has changed in the past five decades and how advertising and society have shaped each other.

Combining anecdote and analyses to give us a slice of modern history, Ambi evaluates the relationship between affluence, aspiration and desire in India. Exploring trends and impacts, he covers the ads that captured the imagination of the entire country. From 'Only Vimal' and 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' to 'Jo biwi se kare pyaar' and the controversial Tuffs shoes campaign, the book is a memorable journey through brands, consumers and the world of advertising.

One of the Best Books on Indian Advertising

Loved the Book. A trip down the memory lane of Ads in India. The book moves between an entertaining list of Ads to a book on India's Socio economic status in the last 50 years. Amazing..!!!

Amazing indian Advertising History

Should be listened by all from the Indian advertising industry. Suyash Barve take us to our childhood time. Nice voice. Ambi Parameswaranji has shown a path to many. I feel somebody should write about small agencies surviving / sailing through on one or two big client

better tamil please!

While the overall audio was quite enjoyable, the one fly in the ointment was the fact that the narrator hadn't bothered to figure out the right pronunciations for any of the tamil words- And there we write a few sprinkled through the book.

a very well written and informative book

Loved every bit of the book, could easily connect with all the old ads. this book is pretty informative for youngsters and nostalgic for the 50± folks. Pace, examples of ads, history behind making of those super-popular ads, creativity of variety of ad agencies alongside socio-economic progress of the country and how technology has helped evolve advertising as well as reach to the masses and also influenced public thinking. Except a few pronunciation errors here and there, especially Tamil this book is worthy of a good read during leisure, journeys, night time, anytime. Narrator's energy and vigor all thru the book added to the contents of the book. bravo the author and narrator duo.
