Spoiler free: Amazing narration. Although story flops at the end, the writing is pretty engaging. This is the first audiobook that I finished. I'm a sucker for these kinds of contemporary young adult/teen mysteries.

Recommendation: if you like this, you'll like 'I was dead for 13 minutes', 'Suicide notes from beautiful girls'.

This was my first audible listen. I am a huge book fan but lately I have been struggling to find time to read. With a heavy heart and ambivalent feelings, I took the trial subscription of audible. I wanted to listen to something simple to begin with, just to check it out. So going into this, I knew this book wasn't Atlas Shrugged or anything.

The story is simple, four typical teenagers get caught up in a mysterious death of a fellow unpopular student. The cause of it is revealed through their four PoV narration.

If you have watched high school movies or high school TV serials, there is nothing new here. All characters are exactly who you expect to be. You can predict any twists or reveals, chapters before it comes. The writing is simple. The romance is even simpler.

The narrators were very clear, consistent and showed good emotion throughout the novel. Based on the voice you were able to understand which character was speaking pretty easily. There was also slight accent as per what the character warranted, which was also helpful.

In spite of all this, I still had to concentrate to follow along. It wasn't like watching a chick flick while you finish writing your document. I had to pause and rewind at times to catch what I missed. I am going to attribute it to first timer syndrome and give it a few more audibles.

What other choice do I have, given the way my days are going!! If I need to continue my tryst with my beloved books, I better find a way to make this work!

A light breezy listen

Liked the individual performances. Could guess the culprit though, but storyline was good and the flow was very nice.

Well, that was underwhelming...

I've had this book on my 'to-read' list for years simply because the premise fascinated me. However, after finally getting into it - as I finished the last chapter, I felt the author conned me into reading a saccharine romance novel disguised as a nail-biting thriller.

This book is a sheep in wolf's clothing.

One of us was lying indeed.

The story centers around high-school students - Bronwyn, Addy, Nate and Cooper - tangled up in the murder investigation of a student. The four of them are the prime suspects and the plot revolves less around them actually unravelling the threads behind the mysterious murder, and more on their personal lives and how the investigation pushes each of them into unchartered territory with their family, friends and loved ones.

I was mildly taken in by the initial intrigue of trying to figure out which of the four students was possibly the killer - only to be blindsided by the most tedious, cringe-worthy and supremely clichéd romance thread between Bronwyn and Nate. I audibly groaned every time the author decided to focus on these two, and take away from the allure of the actual murder-mystery plot at hand.

I was hoping the last few chapters would surprise me with a twist that would make me go "Damn!" - only to be subjected to a fairly lazy reveal tied together by very convenient plot progression elements to assist that revelation.

Overall - it's ok. If you're into mystery/romance novels, this is definitely up your alley. If you're just a mystery buff, I'd avert your eyes to better books the genre has to offer.

PS: I listened to the audiobook - shoutout to Kim Mai Guest, MacLeod Andrews, Robbie Daymond and Shannon McManus for doing a great job voicing the characters!

Underwhelming...

Stunning!! As a 16yr old myself, a lot of the struggles were real and I cud relate to it. However I couldn't relate to everything but still I enjoyed every bit of it! the story is beyond fabulous with a great mysterious/suspense plot. U will definitely be able to find yourself in the story through one of the characters. Truly it was an escape from the reality to a wonderland that I'm so glad I had the oppertunity to enter....... looking forward to read the sequel!
