「淡雪」「月夜」「浮雲」はうだつの上がらない物書きとのつかず離れずの関係を、若い小田原芸者の視点で描いた佳作。映画監督・小津安二郎（ここでは「大津」として登場）と、「小川」として登場する著者、そして小田原芸者との三角関係を描いた、いわゆる「小津もの」のひとつ。
そのほか、実家で働いていた奉公人を描いた「ある生涯」、著者を批判し続けるが薬物におかされてしまった友人を描く「ある男」など、全９篇を収録。
