Publisher's Summary

The oldest surviving collection of India fables, the Panchatantra, was probably written around 200 BC by the great Hindu scholar Pandit Vishnu Sharma.

The Panchatantra is a book of niti, the wise conduct of life, written in the form a chain of simple stories. Each of these stories has a moral and philosophical theme aiming to guide the listener on how to attain success in life by understanding human nature. These tales have stood the test of time and are pertinent even in modern times.

The Panchatantra is an abridged form written for children. Here is the complete translation of the book as written by Vishnu Sharma.

excellent stories for kids, easy to remember

These stories are told by Vishnu Sharma, who vows to make kings 3 dumb sons good at Neeti shastra within 6 months which otherwise learning rajya shastras takes more than few years .

I enjoy this stories with my 1std son, as bedtime story. we take one story each night, while we discuss about how each story translates to our real life , we also discuss the leadership qualities, how people behave in diff circumstances, choosing friends, making friends etc , which every comes up in story.

it's a continuous story , but there are stories inside stories, so go sequentially to understand the story in entirety , don't pick stories randomly if want to know what's happening in outer story.

i read the physical book and listend to the audio

this is one of the few originals of panchantantra without too much of dramatization.
hence recommended both for listening as well as reading the physical book if you get access to it by rupa publications.

Nice listen for all ages

While we know the stories, this book explains them nicely in the context and the interlocked meanings in THE situations..

Life is all about survival

Panchtantra stories has a different line of narrative. It is far removed from the story types where truth & dharma prevails over everything else - impractical lofty ideals of 'satymev jayate' philosophy. The truth shall prevail results self enfeeblement & even destruction (e.g. Mahabharata, Ramayana). Panchtantra does not pretend about such lofty ideals. It is all about skills, ideas, hope and strategies of self survival. The stories are of practical importance and are related to the real world. These stories inspire to empower communities. I am proud for the fact that these originated from India. UK Rana

The stories are incomplete

All the stories in the book are incomplete so they end abruptly and leave us on the way to nowhere,so only the writer can interpret its moral. As long as you are not the writer of this book don’t buy it

Looks like a children's book but absolutely inappropriate for young children.

imagine the shock when you hear "shut up you, slut" and "insolent harlot" in one single sentence in a book for children. "The story of the sparrow and the monkey" 00:45sec.
