About this listen

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. It’s a prestige posting, and Andrew is thrilled all the more to be assigned to the ship’s Xenobiology laboratory. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Not surprisingly, a great deal of energy below decks is expended on avoiding, at all costs, being assigned to an Away Mission. Then Andrew stumbles on information that completely transforms his and his colleagues’ understanding of what the starship Intrepid really is…and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives.

complicated, broken but enjoyable

read it if you are a John scalzi fan and know about star trek. it is more of a fantasy then science fiction, but just like other Scalzi work, it keeps you gripped. it seems like a part time job with large plot gaps. it is also quite predictable.

Starts off a bit weak, but is a worthwhile read

I didn't much like the first few chapters of this book. It takes a while for the full scope of the book to become apparent, and I didn't much feel a hook until around chapter 5.

The performance starts off very wooden, but he hits his stride about a fourth of the way through the book. Honestly, it felt like the narrator got more animated the more my own interest in the plot grew.

Overall, I'd say it was a good read, and well worth listening to. I was highly entertained for a good week as I listened to this over my spare time.

Mindbendingly Glorious !!

Redshirts takes a routine sci fi caper and turns it around on it's head, John Scalzi does justice and goes far beyond Star Trek here. It's more than just a tribute, the storyline is well developed and characters have you rooting for them from the word go. A very interesting read/listen. Will Wheaton's narration adds that extra zing to it. Worth every minute, 5 Star stuff.
