About this listen

This audiobook was re-recorded with a new narrator, and the new product uploaded on 25th June 2014. Please note that written reviews prior to that date refer to a different narrator.

Winner of the 1973 Nebula and BSFA Awards and the 1974 Hugo, Campbell, and Locus Awards.

At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than 10 trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed.

Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence. It will kindle their wildest dreams...and fan their darkest fears. For no one knows who the Ramans are or why they have come. And now the moment of rendezvous awaits - just behind a Raman airlock door.

Bonus Audio: Includes an exclusive introduction by Hugo Award-winning author Robert J. Sawyer, who explains why Rendezvous with Rama will make the listener ‘feel both humbled and exhilarated at the same time’.

Arthur C. Clarke was born in Minehead in 1917. During the Second World War he served as an RAF radar instructor, rising to the rank of Flight-Lieutenant. After the war he won a BSc in physics and mathematics with first class honours from King's College, London.

He shared an Oscar nomination with Stanley Kubrick for the screenplay of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was based on his story, 'The Sentinel'. He lived in Sri Lanka from 1956 until his death in 2008.

While the book is not a first person story, it has enough pov characters to make you fall in love with it. The pace, the science the philosophy of it all is quite amazing. While it does end on an open note the book itself is complete. Wonderful performance of the audiobook reader also.

Ramans do everything in 3, so there 3 would be maximum stars you can give :)

But this one was a 5 star through and through, timeless classic. I loved imagining the gigantic world as described in the book. No wonder this was never made in a movie, the production cost will be astronomical even with advanced VFX.

the story is very measured, very technical and stretches your mind. But never over the top.

Can't wait to start on the next book in series, hope it stands true to my expectation!

Rendevouz with the best sci-fi!

I had read this book almost 35 years ago, and it had made a lasting impression on me. So much so that when I found the audiobook, I decided to listen to it all over again.
Despite knowing, and remembering in great detail, the full story, it was an amazing experience to listen to this all over again.
The narration is fantastic, especially the change of voice for each character in the story.
This is essential listening for any science-fiction fan.

Simply brilliant, and an all-time classic.

This is a masterpiece! The story is gripping and thought provoking. The story holds even more weight when we see the real world case of Omuamua in 2017 which was eerily similar to the book! I believe we missed our rendezvous with Rama in 2017 and this book is what could have been

One of the best Sci-Fi books written by humans
