विश्व साहित्य के गौरव, अंग्रेजी भाषा के अद्वितीय नाटककार शेक्सपियर का जन्म 26 अप्रैल, 1564 ई. को इंग्लैड के रट्रैटफोर्ड-ओँन-एवोन नामक स्थान में हुआ l उनके पिता एक किसान थे और उन्होंने कोई बहुत उच्च शिक्षा भी प्राप्त नहीं की। इसके अतिरिक्त शेक्सपियर के बचपन के बारे में बहुत कम जानकारी उपलब्ध है। 1582 ई. में उनका विवाह अपने से आठ वर्ष बडी ऐन हैथवे से हुआ। 1587 ई. में शेक्सपियर जीन की एक नाटक कम्पनी में काम करने लगे। वहाँ उन्होंने अनेक नाटक लिखे जिनसे उन्होंने धन और यश दोनों कमाए। 1616 ई. में उनका स्वर्गवास हुआ। प्रसिद्ध हिन्दी साहित्यकार रांगेय राघव ने शेक्सपियर के दस नाटकों का हिन्दी अनुवाद किया है, जो इस सीरीज़ में पाठकों को उपलब्ध कराये जा रहे हैं।
