About this listen

A History of Civilization in France, England, and Germany from 1756, and in the Remainder of Europe from 1715 to 1789

The Pulitzer Prize-winning volume on European civilization by acclaimed historians Will and Ariel Durant.

Rousseau and Revolution, the 10th volume of the Story of Civilization, ranges over a Europe in ferment, but centers on the passionate rebel-philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the great exponent of the romantic impulse toward self-exploration and social revolt, who contended with the great rationalist Voltaire for the mind of Europe. Rousseau condemned civilization as a disease, glorified the noble savage, proclaimed to the world with equal intensity his own love affairs and the natural rights of man, and became the patron saint of the revolution and the worldwide social upheavals of two centuries.

Revolutionary Times Encapsulated By A Revolutionary Historian

Will and Ariel Durant's achievements are agonizingly overlooked and it pains me that very few people know about these works.

This volume, narrated again by the fantastic voice of Stefan, is as important as it is lengthy. It starts with the life of Rousseau, delves into the history of Europe in the 18th century till 1789.

It contains several critical events like the Seven Year War, Division of Poland, Rise of British Navy and its Colonial Empire, American Independence. It describes the life of several men of art and philosophy like Immanuel Kant, Rousseau, Voltaire and the Philosophes, Mozart, Gibbon, Goethe and Schiller. It takes us on a journey through the political, economic and social life of the European states under rulers like Frederick the Great, Catherine the Great, Joseph II, Maria Theresa, Gustavus III and Louis XVI. And finally, it gives us a glimpse of the events and conditions that led to the French Revolution.

Very few books are able to cover the complete history of a time and place. The Durant's accomplish not only that, but they also make reading history fun through the witty and poetic language and lively structure of the books.

I hope that these volumes will be read by a majority some time in the future and that they will be seen as a gateway into the beautiful world of history, which is nothing but a Story of Civilization.
