About this listen
A woman invites a famed artist to visit the remote coastal region where she lives, in the belief that his vision will penetrate the mystery of her life and landscape. Over the course of one hot summer, his provocative presence provides the frame for a study of female fate and male privilege, of the geometries of human relationships, and of the struggle to live morally between our internal and external worlds. With its examination of the possibility that art can both save and destroy us, Second Place is deeply affirming of the human soul, while grappling with its darkest demons.

Enjoyed it
Loved it but struggled to finish. The narrator did fully voiced parts which gave a distinctness to each character, especially the subject of the piece, L. I feel like the novel could've been structured differently to underline the separation between mother and child and their union through the lens of an artist, since I feel that's the strongest theme of the book. There are a lot of beautiful turns of phrases and expressions which made it a beautiful listen. Also love the dilemma that M goes through between making piece with the mundane and chasing a higher more exciting form of living in the second place.
