Publisher's Summary

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves her life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha… and the secrets of her heart.

Good listen..

It was good to listen. 1 word of advice, if you have watched the Netflix series before the book, then things are not going to make sense. Quite different from the series

An unique world building

I just couldn't put it down! very fast paced with intricate world building. I brooded for the characters like I knew them. A very different type of YA Fantasy to enjoy. A beautiful storytelling and writing. Every chapter finished with anticipation which kept me glued. Some people will tell this slow but i love it.

Awesome read

This is an amazing debut novel for the grishverse. I had an amazing experience reading it. But the only problem I had with it was that the world was really confusing in the beginning and so were the characters. I had to read in several times to understand the world, but you get used to it in the end. Overall I really enjoyed this debut novel

Quite exhilarating

I liked this book better than six of crows as the first of a series. Indeed a very great narration by Lauren Fortagang. I hope the netflix adaptation does justice to the awesome writing of Leigh Bardugo. Looking forward to the next read in the trilogy.
4 stars from me.

Great narrator but a not so good story

This had the fantasy vibe I wanted so I picked it up however it wasn't at all what I expected. I think I am the wrong target audience for it. It's most likely aimed at teenage girls or something like that. The story had no real emphasis on the world or their powers. Seemed like a typical teen romance with completely interchangeable background elements and world. A bit disappointing because some of the stuff seemed pretty interesting but I've reached a little past the halfway mark and I don't think I can stomach finishing it.

The narrator on the other hand was absolutely incredible. She had emotion and did different voices which I always enjoy. I think that she was pretty much the reason I stuck onto the book. Will definitely be looking out for other works of hers.
