विश्व साहित्य के गौरव, अंग्रेजी भाषा के अद्वितीय कवि-नाटककार विलियम शेक्सपियर को विश्व का 'साहित्य सम्राट' कहा जाता है। शेक्सपियर का जन्म इंब्वलैंड में 1564 ई. मे' हुआ और 52 वर्षों के अपने जीवन में उन्होंने 37 नाटक और अनेक कविताओं की रचना की। शेक्सपियर के नाटक दुनिया की प्राय: सभी भाषाओँ में अनुवादित हो चुके हैं। उनके नाटक आज भी लोकप्रियता के शिखर पर हैं और विश्व का कोई भी रंगमंच ऐसा नहीं, जिससे उनके नाटक न खेले जाएँ। इस पुस्तक में शेक्सपियर के 11 नाटकों पर आधारित कहानियाँ प्रस्तुत हैं जिनमें दुखांत और सुखांत दोनों प्रकार के नाटक सम्मिलित हैं। शेक्सपियर के ३७ नाटकों में से ११ नाटक चुनकर उनका कथासर प्रस्तुत पुस्तक में दिया गया है। इनमें उनके विख्यात दुःखान्त् नाटक और सुखांत नाटकों की कथाएं सम्मिलित की गयी है।
