சர் ஆர்தர் கோனான் டாயில் திறமையானதொரு கதைசொல்லி. 1881ஆம் ஆண்டு மருத்துவப் பட்டம் பெற்ற இவர், தனது படிப்பு முடிந்த அடுத்த ஆண்டிலேயே “A Study in Scarlet" என்ற முதல் துப்பறியும் நாவலை எழுதினார். இதில்தான், “ஷெர்லாக் ஹோம்ஸ்” என்ற பாத்திரத்தையும், அவருடைய உதவியாராக “வாட்சன்” என்ற பாத்திரத்தையும் இவர் அறிமுகம் செய்தார். அதைத் தொடர்ந்து அந்தப் பாத்திரங்களைக் கொண்டு “The Sign of Four" என்ற நாவலையும் எழுதினார். இதில், ஷெர்லாக் ஹோம்ஸ் என்ற பாத்திரம் வாசகர்களின் கவனத்தை ஈர்க்க, “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" என்ற குறுநாவல்களை எழுதினார். இதில், வாட்சன் என்ற கதாபாத்திரம் நேரில் கதை சொல்வதுபோல் அனைத்துக் கதைகளும் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இன்று வரை பல துப்பறியும் கதைகளுக்கும், கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கும் ஷெர்லாக் ஹோம்ஸ் பாத்திரப்படைப்புதான் முன்னோடியாக இருக்கிறது. 19ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் எழுதப்பட்ட கதைகள் என்றாலும், இன்றும்கூட துப்பறியும் கதைகள் வாசிக்க விரும்பும் வாசகர்களுக்கு முதன்மைப் பாத்திரமாக இருப்பது ஷெர்லாக் ஹோம்ஸ்தான்.
