About this listen
From her first day at Westwind Cremation & Burial, 23-year-old Caitlin Doughty threw herself into her curious new profession. Coming face-to-face with the very thing we go to great lengths to avoid thinking about, she started to wonder about the lives of those she cremated and the mourning families they left behind, and found herself confounded by people's erratic reactions to death.
Exploring our death rituals - and those of other cultures - she pleads the case for healthier attitudes around death and dying. Full of bizarre encounters, gallows humour and vivid characters (both living and very dead), this illuminating account makes this otherwise terrifying subject inviting and fascinating.

A nice read.. The author's sense of humour is delightful and the book deals with the concept of death in such a beautiful manner.

Very different
very different from all the books I have ever read or heard. Highly Recommend this book. Never thought anybody can pen out the thoughts about death so intricately and connection with culture made it more knowledge and worth listening.

A humorous and profound way of understanding death & funerals
Death is an integral part of life and this book tries to make death less formidable. Using humour, personal anecdotes and technical information from the American funeral industry, the author helps us get acquainted with and comfortable with death.
I think this book would be a good starter book for anyone interested in understanding death. It isn’t dense and doesn’t philosophise too much.
The narration by the author is really good - lively and engaging. Not at all morose and grim reaper-like, as the popular narratives have told us, morticians are.

An insightful read into crematory management
A unique first person POV on what it is like to work at a crematory with (often graphic) details of dead bodies including details on embalming, cremation, etc. the book focuses on death rituals broadly but follows the author’s own journey as someone who has worked in a mortuary for several years. Definitely an interesting listen. The author’s writing is engaging but she tries too hard to make jokes or be poetic. But definitely worth listening to / reading.
