Xenophobic and racist.
This book maybe belongs to another time in the past, were racism was acceptable. I am sure even rudyard kipling would have seen the blatant xenophobia in this text. The book takes a view on India and especially Kokata that had just emerged from centuries of colonial exploitation : 200 years of brutal colonial rule that had transformed the richest part of the globe (fact) into a poor and economically backward society. However the author criticism is mainly directed at the culture of the city that he demonises. A culture that had produced in that very timeline many noble prize winning authors and scientists. The problem also arises from the fact that his condescending prose tries to use concepts from Indian culture and race without context, just to lend authenticity to his ludicrous claims about Indian culture and religion. This book does not even belong to the gutters of Kolkata.
