About this listen
I forget what took me to Fosterganj in the first place. Destiny, perhaps, although I'm not sure why destiny would have bothered to guide an itinerant writer to an obscure little hamlet in the hills. Chance would be a better word. For chance plays a great part in all our lives. And it was just by chance that I found myself in the Fosterganj bazaar one fine morning early in May....

sensational
Ruskin's unique observations of Shimla s landscape and it's people makes this an engaging tale full of twists and turns.

Interesting tales from an unhappening hamlet
I just finished Tales of Fosterganj, written by the great writer Ruskin Bond and narrated by Sam Dastor in his mesmerising voice. The true account of events revolves around Hasan, a passionate baker with a kind heart, Vishal, a banker with a soul of Jim Corbett in him, Foster, a booze-loving human creature always short of money; and Sunil, a pickpocketer and lazy kind of boy but quite talkative with big dreams. Then there is a person who sells Sanda's oil made from rock lizards to increase the power of manhood, who also sold a bottle to the writer, which he never used! There is a crooked couple too who murders people for precious jewellery.
Somewhere, the writer confesses that he loves to abuse in Hindi rather than in any European language. He thinks that filthy words in Hindi are more powerful to convey the message! He described one such event when he snarled several Hindi forbidden slang in Chakrata.
There is also a mention of the name of my city, Roorkee (Uttarakhand). The name of my city also appeared in another book, The Roads to Mussoorie regarding the great Ganga canal in Roorkee by great engineer Sir Cautley.
I am a great fan of Ruskin Bond due to his simplicity in real life, which is reflected in his writings too. His writings drive the reader to appreciate the importance of simple living and the bounty of natural beauty around us.

As expected from imagination of Raskin Bond
The story made me search the Fosterganj on the map only to know it was fictional city.

It's a surreal experience
This is a beautiful collection of stories weaving through several people's lives in a small quaint mountain town. It's narrated wonderfully by Sam Dastor who brings these flowers, people and situations to life. Plug in your earphones, lean back and press play. Summer afternoons won't get better than this.

One of My favourite books.
It's one of my favourite books, whenever I read it I feel nostalgic. Because the first time I read this book was during my summer break in college. So it reminds me of those days. And it's a great listen too, as the narration is quite good.

Typical Ruskin Bond
Breezy, light but not trivial - a typical Ruskin Bond book which is really enjoyable when read. There are some typical twists and turns but these will not throw the reader off the chair. One like me would also get interested instantly as I have visited Mussoorie and its surrounding areas in days quite close to Ruskin setting his story in. This made me feel as if the events were occurring right before my eyes. I have always enjoyed reading (listening) to him and this time was no exception. The narrator too has done a find job. One can feel a near recreation of events and individuals by his modulation of the voice and correctly pausing and building the suspense when needed. Perfectly enjoyable!!
