Slow paced but entertaining Tarzan adventure!
Tarzan and the City of Gold is book 16 in the original series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Similar to previous books, it is a lost civilization adventure. Tarzan rescues a person from bandits, who is dressed in ancient Greek finery and agrees to escort him back to his country, the valley of Ontar which resides Cathne and Athne the cities of gold and ivory.
The action scenes as always in this series are visceral and varied from lion hunts, assassination attempts to gladiatorial fights. The narrator Ben Dooley does a great job of making these chapters feel epic and bombastic.
However, the book is slow paced and the side characters aren't as interesting in contrast to previous books. Still, this is a good adventure story with a memorable showdown and ending.
This authorised library edition also has extensive afterword on the creation of this story and I always enjoy these extra features in a book
