Tarzan vs Leopard Men in a pulpy jungle adventure!
Tarzan and the Leopard Men is book 18 in the original series by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
The book has 2 parallel stories that intersect. One follows Orando and his people and Tarzan who combat the threat of the Leopard Men, a dangerous cult who practice ritualistic cannibalism and whose members are hidden in plain sight among other native tribes of the country.
The other is a woman named Kali Bwana who is on a quest to find her missing man.
Until now the Tarzan series are entertaining adventure stories but Leopard Men was the first book in the series which felt average, at least initially. Kali's story wasn't interesting and once the threat of the Leopard Men ends halfway through we are stuck with 4-5 boring chapters without Tarzan or Orando in the picture.
Thankfully when the 2 plotlines intersect the story became much better as Tarzan takes center stage and we have classic ERB style visceral action and humor with an ending that wraps everything up.
Nevertheless I think this is the weakest Tarzan book yet. The Leopard Men cult are intimidating villains but ERB doesn't do enough justice. Kali Bwana is quite boring with a motivation which is basic and her story only gets interesting once Tarzan gets involved.
Recommended for fans only. The audiobook is the Edgar Rice Burroughs authorised library edition by Oasis Audio which comes with extensive afterword and the narration by Ben Dooley is quite good.
