About this listen
Random House presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, read by Kathleen Gati.
A young woman's family is threatened by forces both real and fantastical in this debut novel inspired by Russian fairy tales.
In a village at the edge of the wilderness of Northern Russia, where the winds blow cold and the snow falls many months of the year, a stranger with piercing blue eyes presents a new father with a gift - a precious jewel on a delicate chain, intended for his young daughter. Uncertain of its meaning, the father hides the gift away, and his daughter, Vasya, grows up a wild, willful girl, to the chagrin of her family. But when mysterious forces threaten the happiness of their village, Vasya discovers that, armed only with the necklace, she may be the only one who can keep the darkness at bay.
Atmospheric and enchanting, with an engrossing adventure at its core, The Bear and the Nightingale is perfect for fans of Naomi Novik's Uprooted, Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus and Neil Gaiman.

I loved The Bear and the Nightingale!
This book and the reading was a beautiful Russian fairytale marvel. The narration transports the listener completely into the story. The characters came alive for me.

Kind of dragging.
The narrator was okay but struggled to finish. Not as gripping as Spinning Silver. I started it because I wanted to read something similar to Naomi Novik's Uprooted and Spinning Silver but this story didn't have a great hook. In certain moments I found the narration funny as well for eg when someone's supposed to be screaming "no" or shouting "no" but the narrator would just drag it out as a "noooo" in a hoarse manner...it kept taking me out of the story because I'd snort.
I also feel like the story in itself didn't make much sense to me: *SPOILER ALERT*
Why would the MC want to save people who are horrible to her? Overall I felt that the story didn't justify motivations for actions.

Her voice for this narration was perfect.
Her voice made this book as magical as the whole story. I could listen to this again by the fire, on a winter night and be as enchanted by it as the first time.
I listened while I was on bus, the story was so engrossing that I had read the book but, BUT I felt the narration was better than my own voice. Mine was not as magical as her narration.

Interesting story but the narration is weak
I loved the Russian fairy tales woven in this storyline but the narration was too childish for me. This is more like a teenage readers level than a YA

Not a fan
At first i liked it but during the middle part i started to loose interest. I hated the priest. And the protagonist is quite shallow. it felt like she was made to be a brave heroine for the sake of the story. There is no purpose for her struggle. She showed herself to be a rebel but the things does not make sense. I wanted to get involved with the character but unfortunately could not do that. I have no problem with slow pace stories but this story does not achieve any purpose. All the while reading the question always nagged me was "what is the story trying to tell"? I mean apart from the atmospheric writting and the folklore magic there is no development, very shallow reasons behind the happenings. The impact of the story does not shake your mind. I completely lost interest during the ending. Unfortunately i will not continue with the series. After reading some rave reviews i was very eager to read but got a very disappointing experience.
