About this listen

In August 2009, a 39-year-old policewoman went missing in Tamil Nadu. A month later, her heavily decomposed body was discovered in a drain by a graveyard. She had been brutally violated and killed.

As the investigation started, the police detected a pattern in more than a dozen unsolved rape-and-murder cases with mutilated bodies of women turning up in graveyards, drains, and empty fields along the highways.

It didn’t take the police too long to find out that the perpetrator was a trucker named M Jaishankar.

What followed was a cat-and-mouse game across states, many more gruesome killings, one of the most sensational jailbreaks in the history of the country, and a controversial suicide in a high security cell.

The Highway Murders is the breathtaking true story of 'Psycho Shankar', one of India's most notorious serial killers, and one policeman's relentless decade-long battle against the 'terror of the highways'.

Worst narration ever!

Mashette for machete, nausheating for nauseating, atopsy for autopsy, prilinary for preliminary, plates for plaits, monstair for monster, in-nerds for innards, reecollection for recollection, wreething for writhing, ashfaalt for asphalt, oins for loins, reked for reeked, cloths for clothes, cuffing for coughing, quiet for quite, deteer for deter, scused for excused, psychopaath for psychopath, illusive for elusive, smauthered for smothered, frightairs for fighters, centairs for centres, vaallow for wallow, plumb-er, riki for recce, premyses for premises, pedikament for predicament, wrecked for wreaked, beath-ed for breathed, azertained for assertained, moustach for moustache, ignonomy for ignominy,

While the story of the highway killer is compelling, this audiobook was difficult to enjoy due to several factors. The narrator’s frequent mispronunciations (see above) made it hard to stay engaged, and his vocal modulation—often using exaggerated tones—felt out of place and distracting. On top of that, the writing itself contains numerous grammatical errors, which further disrupted the flow of the narrative. Despite these issues, the underlying account remains interesting, but the overall listening experience suffered due to these flaws.

A thrilling true-crime story...

A half naked body of a police woman has been found. The police have an unenviable task of identifying the killer and bringing him to book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The story by Sourabh Mukherjee is riveting and holds you to the very end. The suspense is palpable. As the story unfolds, there several surprises along the way. Nicely narrated by Chandrahas Shetty in a very well-modulated voice.

Alert: Be prepared for a lot of gruesomeness.

Strongly recommended if you like true-crime stories.
