About this listen
The latest dark and twisty thriller by the million-copy best-selling author of Silent Child.
Housemaid wanted.
Skills required: discretion, and the willingness to go the extra mile.
It seems like the perfect job. Great wages, accommodation provided and all located within the walls of Highwood Hall, a stunning stately home owned by the Howard family. Not many little girls dream of becoming a maid, but this is an opportunity for me to get back on my feet. And for me to revisit my past....
But I soon realise I’ve made a mistake. The strict housekeeper, Mrs Huxley, watches my every move, emerging from the shadows when least expected. Lord Howard’s son, Alex, takes an interest in me, and as a former addict, I find myself drawn to him because I know he’s bad for me. There’s a general atmosphere of unease at Highwood Hall, from the narrow tunnels laced throughout the sprawling house, to the abandoned north wing, rumoured to be haunted. It’s easy to imagine the secrets hidden within these walls, like the secrets I hold close.
On my first day, I receive a mysterious package. I open up the pretty gift box to find a miniature doll version of me trapped inside a dollhouse. In this scene I’m dead, lying in a pool of red paint at the bottom of the perfectly recreated staircase. Someone sent this threatening diorama to me, but who even knows I work at the hall? And what do they want?
I know only one truth: my perfect job is turning into my perfect nightmare.

Dark
This is the first audiobook that I read and I enjoyed it.
The story is about a maid who starts working for a family and things start becoming creepy and mysterious the day she starts her job.
The first half of the book is a bit slow with the only suspicious things arriving continuously are the dioramas. I felt the book to be dark. Just by reading the blurb I never imagined that the book contained all the dark things it did. There is a major twist at the end of part one which is a bit confusing. I had to pause and retrace the book in order to understand what exactly had happened.
Part two is fast paced and a quick read. The book could have ended when the police arrived the first time, it would have been the perfect ending, if Alex hadn't escaped. Anyways, it was a good read, and the suspense increases with each chapter. It is recommended to all mystery and thriller lovers.

Mind-blowing thriller novel to keep you on edge
A twisted tale of coincidences which ended up in giving the same outcome everytime, until Emliy showed up with ulterior motives in mind. The book will keep you hooked up till the very end and there isn't any going back once you begin.

it's thrilling!
🔸the starting
🔹starts a bit slow but mids & ends are awesome & despite that, anyone that likes mystery/thriller/romance will like it especially with the music & subtle eerieness, except for when the illusion breaks. everything is really subtle & progress is natural.
🔸exceptional portrayal of a profession
The way lives of maids were given importance, main characters friendships, their bonds was really
touching and heartwarming. You end up being reminded how the real world can dehumanize certain professions and professionals that have them and one of them being maids with rare employers that actually treat them sincerely.
🔹In traditional and mainstream fiction most maids almost always used to be portrayed as side characters or people that were only ever showed worth being a main character after they got a job upgrade or a loving relationship.
🔹But here maids are being shown as people and humans that are remarkable whose lives are worth something to their loved ones without having to have all the material/social achievements of money, high level job or perfect relationships that's expected by society.
🔸characters focus
🔹true focus on only their personality, their strengths, vulnerabilities, flaws and hardships they've been through is shown. It's something people tend to forget in the rat race and where regardless of whether they are a high/middle/lower ranked person, people are only valued by superficial parts of social expectations. And while platonic and romantic relationships are shown they are not only things that make up their individual lives.
They are humanized, which is truly refreshing and rare to see and it's a good example that cliches are finally changing.
🔹it isn't just a story meant for a formulaic attention grab by adding just mechanical emotionless thrillers of just killing and chasem, rushed & fast romances alone. It has a justified build up and you can learn a lot from it given that you focus on things other than just main genres as well and think about the subtle emotions portrayed.
🔹Ofcourse if you just prefer pure thriller from start to the end with nothing in between it's a bit slow at the start but it doesn't disappoint later.
🔸Main characters
🔹female lead was really brave & not easy to fool in the long run, even if she did fall for things as any one would at first. most main and support characters development and stories are given enough attention.
🔅 what we can learn
🔸 realistic portrayal of abuse
🔹despite the main characters initial attraction towards their abuser she recognizes it as abuse so it isn't romanticized. So it's a realistic portrayal of abuse without misportrayal. While it's not completely unrealistic for their victims regardless of gender to fall for their abusers and sometimes deny/ignore/be in-denial about the wrong their abusers do,many works tend to make it a common cliche and portray it as if it's a normal relationship when it isn't.
So a lot of realistic portrayals which many people have been requesting and crave is much needed in the world of fiction for certain sensitive topics.
🔺SPOILER ALERTS
🔸victim grooming
🔸C45:2m: ruby understanding meaning of alexs words : "the tradition of howards learning an instrument was a way to groom the maids" tells of how intentionally psychologically manipulative some abusers can be despite us not realizing. And this stands true for both fiction and real life at times.
🔺depth of realism
🔸C45:0m: portrayal of general police procedure: police officers restrained and cuffed aide because he had a weapon despite the fact that it was a self defense. This is something that could realistically happen and small details here and there keep reminding you of it.
🔸 confusing parts
🔹there's something amiss. the chapters where it switched from emily to ruby was confusing as alex called female leads mothers name (emily) when he played piano, when it happened atleast 20 years ago and alex should have been a kid.
so part where narration switched from emily to ruby is a bit confusing, unless she used her mothers first name deliberately. Otherwise it's a bit confusing to know whose story was going on at start. But despite that it's a thrilling listen/read & you don't have to worry about it till it's near the end.

Too rambling for my taste
Struggled to finish the audible version. Definitely not going to try again. The narration, too was not to my liking, to be honest. Or maybe it is just me.
