About this listen

In a book of unprecedented scope Iain McGilchrist presents a fascinating exploration of the differences between the brain’s left and right hemispheres and how those differences have affected society, history and culture.

McGilchrist draws on a vast body of recent research in neuroscience and psychology to reveal that the difference is profound: the left hemisphere is detail oriented, while the right has greater breadth, flexibility and generosity.

McGilchrist then takes the listener on a journey through the history of Western culture, illustrating the tension between these two worlds as revealed in the thought and belief of thinkers and artists from Aeschylus to Magritte.

Dense but clear, mostly

I selected this book after reading Daniel Kahneman’s ‘Thinking Fast and Slow’, which was a breeze compared to this monster.

This book needs a lot of referencing and the reader must commit their full attention at all times, I held the book and revisited narrations at the same time I was listening to this audiobook, emptied a highlighter marking important passages and references from beginning to the end.

I gave 4 stars under ‘Story’ as the author could have expanded on Upanishads which he only mentioned in passing as tertiary reference. Ancient Upanishads cover a great deal of what he was trying to explain. Maybe another left brain rejection? Another case of Gödel’s incompleteness!

Magisterial account of the Brain.

Extremely detailed account of the world we live in based on the tendencies of our hemisphere. I am deeply grateful to have enriched myself with the knowledge Iain has provided and am actively working to incorporate them into my daily life . A truly masterful work. This work has helped in bringing balance in my internal world. The emissary has found why it had struggled for so long. It has found its guide, its mentor, its Master.
