About this listen
Mary Magdalene is one of the most influential symbols in the history of Christianity - yet, if you look in the Bible, you'll find only a handful of verses that speak of her. How did she become such a compelling saint in the face of such paltry evidence? In her effort to answer that question, Cynthia Bourgeault examines the Bible, church tradition, art, legend, and newly discovered texts to see what's there. She then applies her own reasoning and intuition, informed by the wisdom of the ages-old Christian contemplative tradition. What emerges is a radical view of Mary Magdalene as Jesus' most important disciple, the one he considered to understand his teaching best. That teaching was characterized by a nondualistic approach to the world and by a deep understanding of the value of the feminine. Cynthia shows how an understanding of Mary Magdalene can revitalize contemporary Christianity, how Christians and others can, through her, find their way to Jesus' original teachings and apply them to their modern lives.

Masterful rethinking of Christian beliefs
This is an excellent study of the earliest Christian writings prior to the separation of Canonical vs Gnostic as determined in the first 1000 years of Christian church as it became more dogmatic and patriarchal. Its clear, in these writings, that Jesus brought a message of hope and love to all, and not the message of obedience and faith as prescribed by the Church, while classification of women and non believers to second class subjects, whose loyalty was suspect, and who could not be trusted with authority. It is refreshing to understand the original teachings are much more in line with a 21st century understanding of human relationships based on science and history as the church with its self imposed narrow perspective is succumbing to its own ideas of irrelevance. It shows that the teachings of Jesus are timeless, while ego, bigotry, greed and pride are destined to fail no matter how the mighty try to cling on to them. There is a great hidden message in this text - 'To thine own self be true' The idea that somehow Gods creation of man is somehow flawed and vile, in need of saving by a church is a great insult and certainly as this book painstakingly outlines has nothing to do with the teachings of Christ.
