Publisher's Summary
With the epic sweep of Min Jin Lee's Pachinko and Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing and the lyrical beauty of Vaddey Ratner's In the Shadow of the Banyan, The Mountains Sing tells an enveloping, multigenerational tale of the Trần family, set against the backdrop of the Việt Nam War.
Trần Diệu Lan, who was born in 1920, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North. Years later in Hà Nội, her young granddaughter, Hương, comes of age as her parents and uncles head off down the Hồ Chí Minh Trail to fight in a conflict that tore not just her beloved country, but her family apart.
Vivid, gripping, and steeped in the language and traditions of Việt Nam, The Mountains Sing brings to life the human costs of this conflict from the point of view of the Vietnamese people themselves, while showing us the true power of kindness and hope. The Mountains Sing is celebrated Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai's first novel in English.

Vietnamese stories they don't tell you about
Even though this is a work of fiction, it is extensively inspired by real life stories of the people of Vietnam and how the far reaching effects of war continue with the generations in so many ways. A work with the human heart at its core told by the ones who own and have lived it. The narrator's soft and calm rendition helped with the storyline. At some places it felt felt slightly monotonous and it was a little difficult to keep up with all the names.

A very interesting Vietnamese perspective about the Vietnam war
We often hear of the American perspective of the Vietnam War. But seldom do people cover how the Vietnamese people braved the horrors of the event. This book is a beautiful and sorrowful look into the darkness that the war spawned.
Both stories narrated here are very interesting. They showcase generational trauma and suffering, as well as the evolution of forgiveness.
The narrator takes a bit getting used to because they have a very whispering voice in some sections. But I loved the authenticity of their Vietnamese pronunciation. It felt nice to listen to the phrases in the original language.
A great, quick listen.

Beautiful story, narration is mediocre
The story is set in Vietnam, against the backdrop of the war and follows the lives of one family. It is beautifully written and powerful. The narration was mediocre because the narrator did not have much of a vocal range, but otherwise it’s a lovely book.
