The Name of the Rose is a thrilling story enriched with period detail and laced with tongue-in-cheek allusions to fictional characters, the most striking of which is the Franciscan friar William of Baskerville, who displays many characteristics of Sherlock Holmes. Although he looks at the past through a postmodern lens, Eco catapults his listeners into the dark medieval world as Brother William tries to discover why people are dying inexplicably and nastily in the monastery. There is something not altogether right within the library that is the pride of the establishment.... The old man Adso, who was an impressionable novice at the time, tells the story.

Masterpiece
God does not exist. Human beings need a God or rather need to believe in something, a God or piece of stone is one and the same for the one who believes and once the believer recognizes this fact he/she can throw away the belief in the order of the universe because there isn't one. It's just chaos. The best chance we have of not damning our souls is to recognize the pattern in this chaos.

Long winding story
Start it only if you have time and no commitment issues. The story is slow, long and winding. With majority of action in dialogues rather than scenes. Also religious stuff you may or may not be familiar with.

Sherlock holmes set in medieval europe
I loved the narration of the story. The backdrop of the mystery is as interesting as the mystery itself.

long philosophical disscussions.
listner can get into the mindset of 14th century monks.
also can delve into the papal schism and corruption in the church and the many suborders of the catholic church.

Excellent narration
The theme andnarration stand out as winners! I loved it thoroughly. Honestly, had trouble following it in the beginning but as the chapters went on, I started to love every bit of it.
