About this listen

Telling her tale with all the attention to detail that has led fans to compare her to such literary greats as H. G. Wells, Erin Morgenstern's world is as dark and thrilling as it is monochromatic.

Longlisted for the 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction.

In 1886, a mysterious travelling circus becomes an international sensation. Open only at night, constructed entirely in black and white, Le Cirque des Rêves delights all who wander its circular paths and warm themselves at its bonfire. Although there are acrobats, fortune-tellers, and contortionists, the Circus of Dreams is no conventional spectacle. Some tents contain clouds, some ice. The circus seems almost to cast a spell over its aficionados, who call themselves the rêveurs - the dreamers.

At the heart of the story is the tangled relationship between two young magicians, Celia, the enchanter’s daughter, and Marco, the sorcerer’s apprentice. At the behest of their shadowy masters, they find themselves locked in a deadly contest, forced to test the very limits of the imagination, and of their love....

A fabulous, fin-de-siècle feast for the senses and a life-affirming love story, The Night Circus is a captivating novel that will make the real world seem fantastical and a fantasy world real.

Amazing! Very well written

I finished it so fast. Amazing read. The narrator does a good job at it. The description of the Circus was very enchanting and beautiful. The author makes imagining the circus very easy.

Takes you there

Even though the narrative style is unconventional, it creates a world in three-dimension better than any other fantasy book. Well-written and worth listening to.

Nothing to rave about

I picked up this book after reading the rave reviews. Typically, am not into Fantasy genre but decided to go for it after reading the reviews. This book did not strike a chord with me. the story did not resonate .. I really wanted to like the book.. but.. it was mediocre for me.

A Magical Reverie

I find it in my heart words falling short in describing the brilliance and the beauty of the writing. The narration was aptly carried. I walk away from this book mesmerised, it's essence engraving within me.

A tale of magic that fails to captivate

Perhaps it's just not for everyone, but I found it a drag. I persevered for almost half the book but ultimately gave up. The narration is not bad but he uses the same tone for most of the characters which gets tiring.

One of the best fantasy fictions I have ever read

One of the best fantasy fictions I have ever read! The story building, narration and characters are superbly described. Despite being a stand alone fantasy book (which I think is quite rare), it ties up very nicely at the end. Even if the author decides to write sequels, which I hope she does, there's a ton of stories to pick up.
This review is incomplete without giving due credit to Jim Dale's endearing voice which made this book even better!
Note: I believe Name of the Wind fans would like the book
