About this listen

In this first of a planned five-volume set, David Roy provides a complete and annotated translation of the famous Chin P'ing Mei, an anonymous sixteenth-century Chinese novel that focuses on the domestic life of Hsi-men Ch'ing, a corrupt, upwardly mobile merchant in a provincial town, who maintains a harem of six wives and concubines. This work, known primarily for its erotic realism, is also a landmark in the development of the narrative art form - not only from a specifically Chinese perspective but in a world-historical context.

Accurate sketch of provincial upper middle class Chinese society for grown ups

George Backman’s voice is unique and mesmerising. It adds so much to the text which has linear action with side quests but can occasionally get tedious. The audiobook format and wily narration help to keep you on track. The women are grasping, cruel and competitive; in a medieval household, their status depended on the respect and preference accorded to them by the man of the house. Ximen Qing, said man of the house, is a dissolute, corrupt, cowardly a*se who had it coming, but the writer seems to like and hate him. Had he chosen suitable life partners, or stuck to the official wife he had, things would have been different and better, but then the novel wouldn’t have been written.
