extremely engaging

the author gives several examples explaining how habits work automatically. where this book shines out over other habit books is the author assembling all scientific research around how memory works automatically. Loved the examples of Eugene.

Quite informative with practical tips.

Breadth of examples is enormous, but they are interweaved extensively, sometimes making it a not so lucid read. But possibly the complex subject of changing habits warrants a complex treatment.

A Book for Self-Realisation and more…

This book by @CharlesDuhigg takes you on a journey of self realisation of how habits play an integral role in our life.

He takes various life examples to explain how human beings are a creature of habit, but with effort can replace a bad habit with a good one.

It’s a tough journey of reflection, resilience and planning that helps us work towards developing new ones or change existing habits.

While there are various examples in the book, I would like to share what lies in the appendix of the book. It’s the crux and guide to how we can use the authors learnings in our daily life both at work and home.

1. Step 1- Isolate Cues from Chaos: This is a structured 5 step model where you answer these questions for a week, maybe more to understand what’s triggering a habit. Let’s take an example of Smoking.

Time- When do you feel like smoking?
Location- What’s your location at that time?
Emotional State- What’s your emotional state at that time?
What task did you before smoking?
Who else is around you at that time?

After answering these questions, you have realised that your cue/trigger is your emotional state of being stressed

2. Step 2- Validating the reward craving hypothesis: Every habit is linked to a reward. Let’s continue with the above example, you need to understand what reward you’re getting out of smoking. This journey might not be easy, but you have to try various things until you arrive at one.

After this exercise, let’s say smoking helps relieve stress. You have to start working on different options everyday that help you give the same reward as a replacement.

3. Step 3- Routine: Coming up with the routine to ensure we follow the above exercise will help us replace this bad habit with a new one permanently. This is one of the most important step as it tests your commitment to make the right choice.
