About this listen
Man Booker Prize, Fiction, 2011
The powerful, unsettling, and beautifully crafted new novel from one of England’s greatest contemporary writers.
Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumour, and wit. Maybe Adrian was a little more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is retired. He’s had a career and a single marriage, a calm divorce. He’s certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyer’s letter is about to prove.
The Sense of an Ending is the story of one man coming to terms with the mutable past. Laced with trademark precision, dexterity, and insight, it is the work of one of the world’s most distinguished writers.
A complete and unabridged reading by Richard Morant.

loved it. beautiful prose.
“Sometimes I think the purpose of life is to reconcile us to its eventual loss by wearing us down, by proving, however long it takes, that life isn't all it's cracked up to be."

Engaging and personal!
The narrative is engaging and feels very personal. When you reach to the end of it, your stomach night churn and your heart might stink a bit, but hang in there and try remembering everything you read before and make sense out of all of it, connect the dots.
I found the narration really good, consistent, no technical errors.

straightforward yet twisted
This was a short book. I liked that the author introduced few characters saying they aren't relevant to the story, which kept it shorter. Overall it can be a very simple and straightforward story where an event happens. if I were a participant in such an event, I would have behaved like one of the characters. and that is what makes this book stand out. We all first make a decision and then justify it through our actions and emotions, blaming someone else sometimes. we bring out our own version of narration which keeps evolving as time progresses. We put too much emphasis on the actions of a successful person, and fail to see success in an average life. The story connects how an action in the past could impact many lives in the future. the story is simple, yet it stands out.
