About this listen

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

A representation of these laws is now written into the flesh of any who use the Gift, forcing those so marked into absolute obedience. As a student of the Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war fought--and lost--before he was born. Despised by most beyond the school walls, he and those around him are all but prisoners as they attempt to learn control of the Gift. Worse, as Davian struggles with his lessons, he knows there is further to fall if he cannot pass his final tests. But when he discovers he has the ability to wield the forbidden power of the Augurs, he sets into motion a chain of events that will change everything.

To the north an ancient enemy, long thought defeated, begins to stir. And to the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian’s wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is....

Good beginning for a high fantasy series

The story is pretty good but the writing felt a little bleak. The twists are good if somewhat expected but as a first book in a series it's quite good and I'm quite looking forward to book 2.

excellent performance for an above average book

the story is definitely very good. the plot has depth to it. but the performance by the narrator makes it a very good listen. worth the 1 credit

Enjoyed a LOT!

4.5 stars! This was so good. The blurb telling Sanderson fans will like this was not wrong.
I liked sooo many of the characters! There was a lot of development. This is mostly plot driven but all the characters are so compelling.
Let my boy Caeden have some peace 🥺 he's trying his best!
Also the reveals were delicious and so well done. I genuinely screamed Noooo at two of the biggest ones 😭

Great Read! Could have been better though

A well written high fantasy and a well constructed world to step into. If you are looking for a world to engross you, this book will not disappoint. Some parts could have been better though, like the way the wars, cities, people, interactions were described could have had a tad more detail than was present here. It's mostly me nitpicking though. This book is guaranteed to entertain! Proven by the fact that I'm about to jump into part 2!

A roller-coaster ride through out.

I loved listening to this audiobook! The story was engaging and well-written, and the voice acting was excellent. It took me a few chapters to get used to the voice acting, but by the midway point of the book, I was really enjoying it. The voice actor did a great job of bringing the characters to life and making the world sound gritty and realistic. I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who enjoys fantasy or science fiction.

ps: Still can't over the last 10 minutes of the epilogue! I was like what??!!
