Publisher's Summary
In this compact but informative book, the author presents a concise history of the followers of one of the world's newest religions, Sikhism. Beginning with the life and times of the founder, the highly revered Guru Nanak (1469-1539), the contents move on to describe the vital contribution made by nine gurus in shaping and developing the Sikh religion. The significance of the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, and its centrality to the religion are emphasized. The author discusses epoch-making developments such as the setting up of Singh Sabha and the accompanying social reform, the decisive Akali agitation for control of various Sikh shrines and the impact of the Ghadr rebellion.

Story
Banda Singh Bahadur appeared in Sikh history for a relatively short period (1708-1716) but, after the Sikh gurus, influenced it more significantly than any other individual. Banda Singh Bahadur is among the most colourful and fascinating characters in Sikh history. From an ascetic he was transformed into Guru Gobind Singh’s most trusted disciple. So much so that when the seriously injured guru could not lead his Sikh army against the Mughal forces, he appointed Banda Singh Bahadur as his deputy.

Story
In an essay in this anthology, Khushwant Singh claims that he is not a nice man to know. Whatever the truth of that assertion, there is little question about his skill as a witty, eloquent, and entertaining writer. This book collects the best of over three decades of the author’s prose - including his finest journalistic pieces, short stories, translations, jokes, plays, as well as excerpts from his nonfiction books and novels.

Story
From being one of the earliest members of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Vajpayee blossomed into a leading opposition MP by the late 1960s and went on to become External Affairs Minister in the short-lived Janata government and, finally in 1999, to head the first non-Congress government to complete a full term in office. That it was a coalition government made the feat all the more remarkable and testifies to the fact that though wedded to a right-wing political ideology, Vajpayee did not believe in the politics of exclusion.

One of the Many Books to be Read on Sikh History
This is not 'The Book' on Sikh History but certainly one of the few books that should be read. The book is concise and encapsulates the long history of Political Sikhism in itself. Khushwant Singh does justice to history by giving his largely unbiased views on events and connects the dots. What the book does not have is a very detailed account of Sikh History post Independence, especially the 1984 events. As a follow up, son of Khushwant Singh does include his account of events but that leaves an aftertaste in a largely well structured book. Loved it.

Try to read a paperback than an audio book
Dear Speaker…… It is “Sikh’s” which an emphasis on “KH” and not “Seeks”.
There were so many pronunciation that were so wrong. I would have rather read this book than hear it. So disappointed.
The story is decent but the speaker make it super boring.

Unimaginable
The rise of Sikhism was a revelation!!! Such erudite writing was expected of KS, but the mastery over the language was a pleasant surprise and the narrator did full justice to it!!!

informative and precise except for the political opinion of the author and his son in the afterword. for someone who doesn't have much information about Sikhism, this is a good book to listen to.

Not truely represents sikhs ideology.
I was filled with excitement as I picked up this book to delve into the ancient history of Sikhism. However, I found its coverage of Sikh history to be disappointingly brief, lacking depth and breadth. Rather than offering a comprehensive view, it seemed to heavily emphasize polarizing Sikhs toward a particular religious viewpoint, neglecting the fundamental aspect of Sikhs historically protecting Hinduism. The book's predominant focus on a specific political ideology, seemingly aligned with a Khalistani mentality, overshadowed the holistic exploration of Sikhism's multifaceted journey.
