Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. Despite their differences, Achilles befriends the shamed prince, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something deeper – despite the displeasure of Achilles's mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, Achilles must go to war in distant Troy and fulfill his destiny. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus goes with him, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear.

A piquant retelling
A retelling of how hereos are made, not in terms of their achievements, skills or powers but their vulnerabilities, love, affection, and character. The story doesn't talks about the historical events but the simmering conversation that mould them, the rights, the wrongs, the humane feelings and emotions.

beautiful love story (with hundreds of deaths)
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller is my first read in Greek mythology. The story is vivid and the narration gets the right tone and intensity in every scene. In a single read, I have travelled fifteen years in Greek mythology, spanning the blossoming of a childhood love story into something real, and the entire Trojan war.
I considered dropping a star at the beginning -
Thetis, a sea nymph, a goddess of water, is raped by Peleus, king of Phthia, to win her as wife. But there is no acknowledgement of it
... even though the event is narrated! But the story is narrated from the perspective of Patroclus, a boy of ancient Greek and the book is beautifully written, so.

Very well made and very emotionally stirring.
A love story not so easily marred by the conquests of sex and lust, it goes further into the recesses of what it truly feels like to love and be loved.

Loved every moment of it.
The story has a bittersweet ending but every moment leading to it feels like an emotional roller coaster. Pride, love, care, selfishness and all flaws of human beings are portrayed so beautifully. The characters are flawed but relatable. There are no noble heroes in the world everyone works for some selfish reasons and often ends up paying a hefty price for it. This book shows just that.

The narration is good
The narration is good but I would have liked to read this book more than listening it. I feel that the intensity of writing reduces drastically while only listening to it rather than reading.
