About this listen

What are the key factors that win or lose elections in India? What does, or does not, make India's democracy tick? Is this the end of anti-incumbency? Are opinion polls and exit polls reliable? How pervasive is the "fear factor"? Does the Indian woman's vote matter? Does the selection of candidates impact results? Are elections becoming more democratic or less so? Can electronic voting machines (EVMs) be fiddled with? Can Indian elections be called "a jugaad system"?

Published on the eve of India's next general elections, The Verdict uses rigorous psephology, original research and as-yet-undisclosed facts to talk about the entire span of India's electoral history from the first elections in 1952. Crucially, for 2019, it provides pointers to look out for, to see if the incumbent government will win or lose.

Written by Prannoy Roy, renowned for his knack of demystifying electoral politics, and Dorab R. Sopariwala, this book is compulsory reading for anyone interested in politics and elections in India.

Book is insightful, audio needs lot of work

In audiobook transitioning from Chapter 1 to Chapter 2 of Part 2, there's a misplacement of content, resulting in the latter portion of Chapter 1 being erroneously attached to the latter section of Chapter 2 of Part 2. Despite this editorial oversight, the audiobook remains a valuable resource, brimming with insightful analysis and indispensable statistical data.

However, while the statistics contribute depth to the narrative, there's a noticeable repetition of certain facts. To address this, the audiobook could delve deeper into the underlying mechanisms driving observed correlations between variables. By exploring these relationships, listeners can gain a more profound understanding of overarching trends without encountering redundant information. By reframing the discussion to focus on connections between variables rather than isolated data points, the narrative can maintain its analytical depth while avoiding unnecessary repetition.

Additionally, it's important to note that the audiobook's delivery lacks variation, resulting in a monotonous listening experience.

Despite these challenges, it's commendable that the writer has taken the effort to make this valuable content accessible to the general public through the audiobook format.

Good but dry

The book is insightful - but somehow the voiceover, though a good effort, misses that deep voice and baritone that one associates with Prannoy Roy.
