Publisher's Summary

An intoxicating and bloodthirsty sequel to the New York Times best-selling The Cruel Prince, nominated for the Cilip Carnegie Medal 2019.

I have heard that for mortals, the feeling of falling in love is very like the feeling of fear.

Jude has tricked Cardan onto the throne, binding him to her for a year and a day. But the new High King does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her, even as his fascination with her remains undimmed.

Meanwhile, a traitor in the court is scheming against her. Jude must fight for her life and the lives of those she loves, all while battling her own complicated feelings for Cardan. Now a year and a day seems like no time at all....

Great plot & narration

I had already read the book and loved it, but was really able to note some other nuances and plot points while listening to the book. The narration is great, got through it in just 2 days.

about holding on to power 👑

"He liked her anger. 'Fire' he called it. She liked it when she was angry too. Angry was better than scared. Better than remembering she was a mortal among the monsters."

Book one 'The Cruel Prince' had been about the fight for power. Book two 'The Wicked King' is about holding on to power. More difficult than the former.

Jude Duarte continues to impress as a spy, fighter, and strategist. Cardan continues to live up to his reputation. Madoc is calculated, Taryn is going further away from her twin. It's all as expected and yet there is so much unexpected! You think you spot the cliches coming around the corner but they never happen and that's why I have come to love this series!

The slow burn of Jude and Cardan works even by the end of the book! That's good writing and great character and relationship development by Holly Black. Not to mention, perfect narration by Caitlin Kelly.
