Sunday Times bestseller and soon to be a major motion picture!

Women can be heroes, too’. When twenty-year-old nursing student, Frances “Frankie” McGrath, hears these unexpected words, it is a revelation. Raised on California’s idyllic Coronado Island and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing, being a good girl. But in 1965 the world is changing, and she suddenly imagines a different path for her life. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she impulsively joins the Army Nurses Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the young men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war, as well as the unexpected trauma of coming home to a changed America. Frankie will also discover the true value of female friendship and the heartbreak that love can cause.

The Women was a Sunday Times bestseller from 17.2.24-13.4.24

The story stands out...the pain and frustration of The Women is felt deeply through the beautiful narration. Sadly, not much has changed even now. And one can only imagine how much worse it could've been for them and the others. it's a beautiful tribute to the fallen, unsung and forgotten heroes.

A beautiful tribute!

Loved this book in all its heart wrenching and heart warming account. The most contested war of the last century that saw the US at its worst is convered comprehensively by the author. Also the fact that women veterans, initially ignored and unacknowledged is one of the worst facets of the American Politics/Govt that eventually recorded their role and relevance in the war effort with the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. However, this does not diminish the horrific and unnecessary war killing 250,000 Vietnamese soldiers!!

The most I knew of the Vietnam war was Agent orange and the few lines my history text book taught me. This book was a real window to the emotions of all the men and women who served in the war. History teaches us who won, who lost and who was wrong- but the emotional damage to the people who served, the reactions they came home to and the lasting impact on a generation of people is never really captured. The author has really done a great service in this regard, specially to the women who were simply forgotten. Thank you for opening this window to the world!

Deeply Touching

From the start to finish I was hooked on to know about the life of women who served in Vietnam, They gave their all but got a short end of the stick. My heart goes out to them.

A revelation to read about the women in War

The novel focuses on the story of Frances "Frankie" McGrath, an Army nurse who serves in the Vietnam War. It describes her experiences, including the horrors of war and the friendships she forms with other nurses. The story also addresses the historical context of how these nurses were neglected and shamed upon their return, as well as their struggles with PTSD. However midway the book shifts from historical fiction to a more romantic narrative, which I felt detracted from the core story. Despite this, I want to recommend this book for its historical aspects and its portrayal of the experiences of these veterans.

More on romance and less on history
