Am 12. April 1912 lief die R.M.S. Titanic mit 2.200 Passagieren an Bord zu ihrer Jungfernfahrt Richtung New York aus. Das als unsinkbar geltende Schiff war 270 Meter lang, 28 Meter breit und erreichte eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 24 Knoten. Aufgrund der gefahrenen Geschwindigkeit war es nicht möglich, plötzlich auftauchenden Hindernissen auszuweichen. So geschah es, dass am 14. April 1912 das Schiff mit einem Eisberg kollidierte.
