About this listen
When the author's father Richard was 11 years old, he spotted a Brown Thrasher, and his fascination with birds began. Now a "Big Lister", Richard is one of only 10 or so people to have recorded more than 7,000 species in his notebook. This is the remarkable chronicle of his travels across the globe in pursuit of his fixation. It is also a thoughtful examination of the natural world and a touching father/son story.
To See Every Bird gets to the very core of a pastime that is a hobby for millions, and nothing less than an obsession for some.

A father and son and a BIG passion.
Beauty of a book!
The story- if you want to call it that ( because it is a biography- a memoir really) is at heart about a son's longing to know and get closer to his father by trying to understand his father's passion for birding. And his father has an all consuming passion - an obsession to list thousands of birds . He is a medical doctor- Richard Koeppel, one of the few people on earth who has seen 7000+ birds.
The book takes you through the life of such a birder. It is interspersed with interesting history of the birding culture in the US and how it grew- from James Audobon to R.Peterson to present day competitive birding. It introduces many
birding terms such as ' big lister', your ' nemesis bird', and has details about birding expeditions that they undertook to remote parts of the world, the rich descriptions of the birds and what was it like to grow up with such a father.
While the peek into the birding culture was fascinating, equally fascinating to me as a researcher on fathering, was that, it validates a son's longing for a father who was not quite there for his son while growing up and poignantly brings forth nuances of forging a relationship with a parent in later years by trying to understand what drives them. I suppose you don't get to the heart of the parent you love till you understand what makes them tick. In doing so, you hope you will find yourself.
The sonorous voice of John Mc Donough makes it all the more worthwhile to listen to the book while you go about your day's work.
