The Great Courses
About this listen
Every day of your life is spent surrounded by mysteries that involve what appear to be rather ordinary human behaviors. What makes you happy? Where did your personality come from? Why do you have trouble controlling certain behaviors? Why do you behave differently as an adult than you did as an adolescent?
Since the start of recorded history, and probably even before, people have been interested in answering questions about why we behave the way we do. And many fields - including philosophy, psychology, and even theology - are focused on finding explanations. But it's only in recent decades that researchers can finally approach, understand, and solve the mysteries of emotion, thought, and behavior - solutions that help each of us to better know ourselves and the people around us. The result is not only a more solid understanding of what it means to be human, but a stronger foundation from which to live more effectively with others and to grasp their intricate behaviors and quirks.
Now you can gain those benefits through a series of 24 intriguing lectures from an award-winning teacher. Professor Leary takes you on a fascinating journey into the complex heart of who you are, using the latest theories, case studies, experiments, and stories to cast light on a wide variety of human behaviors, both ordinary and puzzling.
Throughout these lectures, you'll learn about the various interacting forces that influence your behavior. These include your genetic blueprint, your personal experiences, your upbringing, and the people and social groups that surround you.

Great insights on collective human psyche
I started this audiobook exactly 2 weeks ago and ever since then, it has been my go-to companion for evening walks. There were certainly a lot of stuff that I used to not notice about my own behaviour or the people around me & now! I can't un-notice it. For better or worse. Haha.
It hooked me on from the start as I have a great deal of interest in all things psychology, as well as scientific reasoning & researches. The narration by Mark Leary is fantastic and connects with you instantly. If you have the most casual of knowledge & interest about this topic, wait no more, my friend. Go ahead. Cheers!

Very good insight into humon behaviour. Could have been better if more examples are included.
Very good insight into humon behaviour and feelings. The lectures could have been more insightful and interesting if real life examples are included. Without these the talks were somewhat monotonous.

Great book. Requires multiple listens
Another gem under the great courses, this one definitely requires one to listen again and again as there is too much information to grasp in one go.

Not great
This book is designed using scientific conceptual framework in mind. The unilinear model of evolution of man from monkeys to men and civilization is not correct and modern archeological findings today support this idea as well . The author should expand his boxed views in order to embrace other models of evolution such as the cyclical theory of evolution accepted by most non western culture as a prevalent system of thought. A fixed conceptual schema cannot explain all anomalies in nature. Our scientific minds are clearly biased and prejudiced and most of all it is evident from our modern day plagues that western thinking needs to accept ignorance. Illuminate, NOT educate.
