Giamblico di Calcide filosofo siro di lingua greca fu il biografo del mistico, filosofo e matematico Pitagora. La scuola pitagorica scomparve nel suo aspetto pubblico per continuare la trasmissione delle sue dottrine attraverso simboli e probabili iniziazioni segrete.
Lo stesso Giamblico ammette che solo alcune scintille di conoscenza sono comprensibili dagli uomini comuni e lascia all'esoterismo lo studio dei simboli e dei trattati trasmessi dai Pitagorici superstiti ai loro discendenti.
