  • Summary

  • Why did Rama have to take the help of the monkeys? A prank Vishnu once played on Narada, making him into a monkey, and Narada’s curse, is retold here. Rama demonstrates his strength to Sugriva, who is finally convinced that Rama can kill Baali. Sugriva challenges Baali to a duel. Thara advises Baali not to accept, but he does not listen. Rama kills Baali by shooting him from behind a tree. The rights and wrongs of this action are discussed in this chapter. Rama conducts Baali's funeral through Baali's son, Angad. This raises the question of why Baali requires cremation if he is an animal? Sugriva forgets his promise to help Rama and loses himself in carousing and merriment. Lakshmana threatens to annihilate all the Vanaras if Sugriva does not keep his word to help Rama. Tara pacifies Lakshmana, and the Vanaras go in search of Sita. They get lost in Maharishi Kaandu's barren lands, and later arrive in Swyamprabha's beautiful valley.
