In "The Five Orange Pips," Sherlock Holmes is visited by a young man named John Openshaw, who tells him about a strange inheritance that his family has received. Openshaw's uncle, Elias, had recently died, and he had left a letter and a box containing five orange pips to his nephew. The letter warned that if anything happened to Elias or his son after his death, the recipient of the letter should open the box and send the pips to a mysterious society, the Ku Klux Klan.
