  • Summary

  • Spot Dada is a 10-episode fictional series from Audible Suno, starring national award-winning actor Swanand Kirkire, Rajeshwari Sachdev and Neena Kulkarni. For the past 40 years, one man in Bollywood has seen it all. Manohar Patil, lovingly known as Spot Dada, started as a spot boy and went on to become the wise old Banyan tree on some of Bollywood’s most iconic sets. However, in the last twelve years, Manohar Patil’s career has nosedived, with a new generation of spot boys taking over. Embittered, cynical and jobless, he still hangs around the sets of large film studios parked endless cups of tea. One phone call from the 90s super star Nishma Kapoor changes everything. As Spot Dada plots ways to reinsert himself back into the role he has played for a lifetime, he finds shadows behind veils, everybody has an agenda, most have a secret and the spotlight twinkles on, blinding the darkness lurking on set.

SPOT DADA

Recently, I discovered a new source of entertainment. The audio stories. My laziness provoked me to find something new and exciting and the pandemic allowed me a great amount of time to explore the world of audio stories. As per usual, I was browsing for the new applications and I found ‘SUNO’ audible application. I think I have developed a new hobby of discovering apps and analysing them. Well, that can lead me to review new apps maybe. But going back to ‘SUNO’, the app includes multi-genre stories like horror, thriller, romantic, intense, entertainment and few podcasts, talk shows plus religious and spiritual lectures. This app allows you to listen to your type of genres, at your comfortable place.

I found an extremely interesting and relevant story to the contemporary scenario of Bollywood. ‘SPOT DADA’, the journey of a spot boy in the most glamorous industry. The story is written by Riya Mukherjee, Saurabh Jain, Varun Garg and Sahib. The genre of the story is a drama (entertainment). It was published under the name of Riya Mukherjee word pictures on 31st January 2020, starring national award-winning actor Swanand Kirkire, Rajeshwari Sachdev, and Neena Kulkarni as the main characters. There are narrations of Harsh Chhaya, Meera Damji, Rituraj K Singh and Rohan Shah in different episodes.

The plot of the story is about Manohar Patil (Mannu Dada), a spot boy who has spent 40 years in Bollywood. Manohar Patil a wise man who has seen all kind of power, politics and rules of the industry. He knows the functionalities of this industry in detail. He has seen success and failure as well. He is the old tree of Bollywood’s most iconic set. The story develops by narrating his relation with the 90s superstar Nishma Kapoor. Manohar was in the illusion of having a friendly relationship with Nishma but later he discovered that she was just utilizing his experience for her own good. The story progresses by a critical game of Manohar to make his son a Bollywood star but unfortunately, things twisted and changes the game.

The audio story is all about voice-overs, folly artists and music. SPOT DADA has very strong music. The music gives a listener feels of the emotions. The voice-over artists are incredibly good. The folly artist has covered details for the show. The story will give you feels about watching the scenes in front of you. The more you listen to it, the more you can visualize. Swanand Kirkire as Manohar Patil exceptionally fantastic. His dialogues, tone, voice modulations have created an amazing vibe which holds the audience till the end. Rajeshwari Sachdev has passionately performed the role and her voice can portray the character very well. She uses two different accents to justify the character. Neena Kulkarni as a wife of Manohar Patil was totally into her character of a Marathi wife. Her Marathi accent attracted a lot of audiences.

One of the themes of the story is nepotism in Bollywood. The story encodes some characters and situations in the industry. There are some characters who project a few known personalities to the audience. The story mentions how dirty politics and favouritism, as well as nepotism, works in the industry. There is a description of the struggle of newcomers and outsiders. In recent times, Bollywood is facing a lot of backlash against nepotism and favouritism. Several actors have mentioned the proofs of facing nepotism on their way to success. This story can be a strong medium to spread the word. It favours real talent and support outsiders to be a part of Bollywood.

SPOT DADA is one of the most relevant stories for the current scenario. It caters entertainment, information, explains functionalities of the industry, projects politics and nature of the industry as well as the story ends with a strong message for the listeners.
